Volunteer Opportunities at Connecticut Audubon Society Grey-cheeked Thrush © 2006 E.H. Soderberg Help Needed with Bird Data for Volunteers in Fairfield Area Long-time bird banding programs at Connecticut Audubon Society Centers and other bird inventory efforts have led to the accumulation of large amounts of valuable information on the presence of bird species across the state. Some of this information is many decades old and provides invaluable “snapshots in time” that allow us to compare historic bird diversity and density with current numbers, and determine whether species are declining or not. Connecticut Audubon Society’s Science and Conservation Department is currently in the process of compiling and analyzing this data, but our progress is hindered by the fact that most of the available information is found in notebooks, old banding sheets and other paper formats. In order to properly analyze the information at hand, it is necessary to have all data in a digital format. If you have an interested in learning more about birds in Connecticut, have some time available and are interested in helping our conservation efforts, we would like to hear from you! The work mostly involves entry of paper data into a computer, so basic computer skills are needed; a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is desirable but training will be provided. Depending on your interest and level of computer skills, we may also use your skills for data analysis. If you are interested or have questions about this project, please contact CAS Conservation Biologist Twan Leenders at 203-259-6305 ext. 114 or tleenders@ctaudubon.org.
