  Coastal Center: SOLO Wilderness First Aid
SOLO's 16-hour comprehensive introductory Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course is a must for outdoor enthusiasts. Using mock rescue scenarios, skilled instructors provide participants hands-on experience with first aid and long-term patient care in the backcountry. Payment in full is due upon registration; please register early. Fee: $189, includes lunch and snacks ($100 is non-refundable). Enjoy a brief presentation while our naturalist staff feeds the Center’s resident turtles and tortoises. Discover fun facts and get an up-close view of these amazing critters.   Center at Fairfield: "Birthday Open House" Honors CAS Founder Mabel Osgood Wright
Help us celebrate the birthday of Mabel Osgood Wright, who was born in 1859 and founded Connecticut Audubon Society in 1898. Our naturalists will help you and your family make suet-and-seed "birthday cakes" to feed to your backyard birds. Enjoy other family activities, including a visit with one of our live education birds. Light refreshments will include some 19th century treats that Mrs. Wright might have enjoyed! At noon, Milan Bull will discuss the "World of Woodpeckers," then lead a walk in our Larsen Wildlife Sanctuary in search of woodpeckers and their signs. Mrs. Wright was also a prolific nature writer; today a limited number of copies of her "Friendship in Nature" book, reprinted in 1999, will be for sale in our Nature Store, where you'll also get 20% off woodpecker seed & woodpecker feeder purchases.   Pomfret: Black Bears in Connecticut
Recently there's been a dramatic increase in the black bear population. Felicia Ortner, CT DEP Master Wildlife Conservationist, will discuss black bears' history, facts and fiction, and how we can best co-exist with them.   Milford Point: Animal Care Club for 12-18 year olds
Our collection of live animals is in need of some TLC. Learn to care for domestic and wild reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Each week we'll focus on a new group of animals, their natural history and care. Meet a tarantula, ball-python, pine snake and many other creatures. On completing the course, participants may join our After School Volunteer Corps that helps us care for our education animals.
