VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR EAGLE VIEWING

The Connecticut Audubon Society is putting out a call to all interested volunteers to help lead tours this winter at The Eagle Viewing Station located at Shepaug Dam! Connecticut Audubon Society, in cooperation with Northeast Generation Services, is seeking volunteers who are willing to assist with public tours at Northeast Utilities’ Shepaug Dam in Southbury, CT. This is an invaluable opportunity to observe wintering bald eagles in their natural habitat. Volunteers are needed between December 28, 2005 and March 15, 2006. The commitment entails a minimum of at least one 4-hour volunteer shift per month, over the three-month period.

A morning volunteer training session will be held at the offices of Northeast Utilities in New Milford, CT, on Saturday, December 3, 2005. The session will provide volunteers with information about the wintering bald eagles and the Shepaug Dam, with a tour following the training session. No previous knowledge of eagles is necessary. Skills needed for interested volunteers include the ability to work well with the public, an interest in learning and teaching, a concern for and understanding of endangered species, and a tolerance for rustic and winter weather conditions.

The Eagle Viewing Station at Shepaug Dam is open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 1:00 p.m. between December 28, 2005 and March 15, 2006. Advanced reservations are required to visit Shepaug Dam and can be made by calling 800-368-8954.

If you are interested in this unique volunteer opportunity, please call Catherine Urbain at Connecticut Audubon (203) 878-7440.
