Sketching and Journaling Classes

Join instructor Justine Lee Hirten (artist, science illustrator, wildlife rehabilitator) and learn how to sketch birds, improve your observation skills, record your insights in an illustrated nature journal, and more!

For all classes, you may bring any sketching materials you like. A Strathmore sketchbook, graphite pencils, and erasers are recommended and colored pencils or watercolors are encouraged. Binoculars and fold-up/travel stools are recommended but not required. All skill levels welcome. See below for the three classes offered:

 

Sketching Birds From Life
Saturday, June 16
10 a.m. – noon

Learn simple building-blocks for sketching bird subjects. You’ll sketch some mounts from the Center at Fairfield’s collection and then move to the birds of prey compound. Field Sketching at Larsen Sanctuary
Saturday, June 23
10 a.m. – noon

Explore using your sketchbook to improve your observational skills and knowledge as a naturalist! You’ll take a walk through the Larsen Sanctuary with your sketchbook and learn about techniques and strategies for successful field sketching. Members $15, Non-members $20. Adults only. Nature Journaling
Saturday, June 30
10 a.m. – noon

Find out how to create an illustrated journal to record your insights and observations from nature! Gather inspiration during a walk through the Larsen Sanctuary with your sketchbook and then move indoors to work on an illustrated journal entry. Members $15, Non-members $20. Adults only.
