The seabirds of Long Island Sound: An online presentation, Thursday at 4 p.m.

June 23, 2020 — Join Connecticut-based seabird expert Allison Black on Thursday, June 25, 4 p.m., for a webinar on Connecticut’s sea-dwelling birds.

Allison, who is outreach adminstrator at our Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center in Old Lyme, spent more than 60 days at sea in 2019 while working for NOAA as a seabird/marine mammal Observer.

She sailed on three large research vessels, including NOAA’s flagship, the Ronald H. Brown, covering areas as far south as the Outer Banks to as far north as the Gulf of Maine and into Canadian waters.

Her field background has been mostly centered on seabirds and shorebirds, while her research has focused on gulls, specifically Great Black-backed and Herring Gulls.

“While I have an appreciation for all birds, I find myself most drawn to those that associate with water and am fascinated by their abilities to survive in such a unique and sometimes harsh environment,” she said.

Allison, who is finishing a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences from Central Connecticut State University, will discuss the identification and life history of the birds you might see while out on Long Island Sound.

While we are offering this program for free, we do ask that you consider a suggested donation of $10.
