Volunteer Opportunity for Birders: Help with Bird Research This June

Hooded Warbler

May 20, 2025 —Attention, birders! Hartmut Doerwaldt, a master’s degree student at Wesleyan University, is conducting a summer field study on insect-eating birds and their predation on white oak caterpillars.

He is recruiting birders with a moderate-to-strong knowledge of the state’s birds. Email him for details but in general the early-morning assignment is to watch birds on 10–15 days in June at sites in Cockaponset State Forest, Giuffrida Park, and Meshomasic State Forest. These, by the way, are among the best places in the state for songbirds.

The project is being conducted under the auspices of the Singer Lab and will likely result in a published paper; volunteers will be included in the paper’s credits.
