Each year the Summer Writer and Artist In-Residence Program at our Trail Wood Sanctuary in Hampton produces inspirational work. This year’s class is no exception. The beauty found in their paintings, photography and written word well reflect the tranquility of Trail Wood. A great boost in the dead of winter, come celebrate this year’s artists and writers and the Trail Wood experience. Free admission – donations always appreciated.

This film, to be released in 2018, investigates the potential dangers of prolonged exposure to radio frequencies (RFs) from wireless technology; its potential effects on our health and the development of our children. Advanced Volunteer Training: Bird Breeding Basics

Current volunteers may join Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society as he leads us in learning about the breeding season. This will include finding a place to breed, finding mates, and building nests.

Guided Winter Nature Walk

Join Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society at the Deer Pond Farm Center in Sherman to learn a little about the upcoming bird breeding season. Although our owls have already begun the breeding season, our Black-Capped Chickadees, Tufted Titmice and Northern Cardinals will be starting soon!

Thinking Thursday Walk & Talk: "Invasive Plant Species"

Join Karen Cowperthwaite, licensed landscape architect and Michelle MacKinnon, advanced master gardener at Deer Pond Farm for a guided walk along trails during National Invasive Species Awareness Week to learn about the non-native plant species that have been introduced in Connecticut. We will examine why certain plants are labeled invasive, the impact they have on our native plant species and the harm that is caused to our bird and other wildlife habitats. Information regarding managing and controlling invasive plants will also be presented.

WILDLIFE TRACKING AND MONITORING - TRAINING / MONITORING HIKES

Search for and document track and sign of large mammals such as fisher, river otter, black bear, and bobcat. Become a trained volunteer and monitor study sites in Willington, Canterbury, Woodstock and Bethany on a quarterly basis. Attend training hikes that suit your schedule throughout the seasons. Registration is required, call 860-928-4948 or send an email to paulacoughlin@charter.net. Training fee per hike: $50 CAS members; $60 non-members.

Adirondack Night - Howl at the Moon

Take a Hike Tuesday

Join Deirdra Wallin, program coordinator and master naturalist for some fresh air and an opportunity to stretch your legs while we explore some different trails at Deer Pond Farm. We’ll be looking and listening for signs of birds and other wildlife while we keep a consistent pace through forests, meadows and around wetlands. Please bring water and hiking pole. Handmade poles from our property available to borrow if you need.

Coastal Waterbirds Conversation with Patrick Comins

Migrating shorebirds will soon be winging their way north, some stay to nest and others continue onwards.

Connecticut Audubon Society’s Executive Director Patrick Comins will speak about our conservation partnership with Audubon Connecticut and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History to conserve nesting waterbirds along the coast of Connecticut.

Discover the important role that Milford Point plays in the conservation of both nesting and migratory shorebirds.

Please join us for an afternoon of information about the birds inhabiting our shorelines. This program is for adults and children ages 12 and up. This program is held at the Coastal Center, 1 Milford Point Road.

Connecticut Audubon members $5; non-members $10.
