November 1, 2023(1 event) – Parents, grandparents, and guardians come out for some fresh air with your toddler for a nature walk and story or activity. Led by retired Pomfret Community School kindergarten teacher, Carolyn Otto, the morning will be full of fun adventures. Dress for the weather. Register by calling 860-928-4948. November 2, 2023(3 events) – Center at Fairfield 2325 Burr Street Fairfield, CT 06824 – Our final lecture of the season takes us into the splendid highland cloud forests of Central America to learn about one of the legendary birds of those habitats: the dazzling Resplendent Quetzal. Alan Poole, known to many of us locally for his research and writing on Ospreys, has spent portions of the past decade in Costa Rica, where quetzals reign supreme. This two-to-three-mile hike is a great way to become familiar with a bit of our 15-mile trail network. In late morning and early afternoon, as many songbirds settle down from their night flights, our birds of prey are making use of warming temperatures and rising thermals to migrate. Many species make their way through and out of Connecticut, and the coastal forests jutting out into Long Island sound are a great spot to search for these majestic flyers. November 11, 2023(3 events) – When you think of the soundscape for a forest, chances are one of the sounds you think of is the drumming of a woodpecker. Woodpeckers are among the most unusual groups of birds, with numerous adaptations for their lifestyle. All of the regularly occurring species of woodpecker can be found in the forests of the Connecticut College Arboretum, and with fewer leaves on the trees, late fall is one of the best times to search for them. November 18, 2023(1 event) – Late fall is a great time in CT to watch for migrating raptors, as many birds make their way back into the state from further north, or pass through on their way further south. We'll watch for Eagles, Hawks, and Falcons at the RTP Estuary Center in Old Lyme. Located on 5 acres on the Lieutenant River, the mix of open habitat, wetlands, and scrubby forests at the center attracts a diverse array of species. Drop in any time between 10 am and 1 pm!
