Snowy Owl Talk

Join Milan Bull, senior director of science and conservation, and birding expert Frank Mantlik for a talk about one of the most sought after birds of winter: the Snowy Owl.

Discover what’s behind this year’s influx of Snowy Owls. Is this an irruption year? He’ll share tips for sighting Snowy Owls and most importantly the ins and outs of Snowy Owl etiquette. 

This program is for adults and children ages 12 and up. This program is held at the Coastal Center, 1 Milford Point Road.

Connecticut Audubon members $5; non-members $10.

Who's There Owl Walk & Talk

Thursdays, Jan 18 & 25, Feb 1, 8, 15 & 22 from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Do your kids need to blow off steam after school? Send them to the Center. After a quick snack, we will head out on the trails to explore and search for animal tracks and sign.  The afternoons will be filled with fresh air, exercise and fun. Wildlife lessons will be quietly inserted along the way.  We will go outside, so warm winter clothing and boots are a must. Fee: $60 for the 6-day session.

Mammal Wildlife Tracking Hikes

Back Yard Bird Feeding Workshop

This is an adult workshop

This class offers the basics in backyard birding. You’ll learn how to identify backyard birds by sight and sound, who is at the feeder during each season and what their feeding habits are. We’ll discuss bird characteristics, ways to attract birds to your feeder, what bird feeders and seed to use, and where to place feeders for bird safety and best viewing. And you will receive a free seed bell! $5 per person

Snow Shoe Making

Saturday, February 3

1 - 2:30 p.m.

Children will make a pair of decorative snow shoes constructed from white pine boughs. While the snowshoes are for decorative purposes, the skills learned can be used to make an emergency pair of snowshoes! Children must be accompanied by a participating adult.

$10 per child/adult team for members: $15 for child/adult team non-members.  Pre-registration required.

Project FeederWatch

Get outside without going outside! Come to the Coastal Center and participate in the citizen science program Project FeederWatch. Learn about birds as we identify, count, and record the birds at our feeders.  
No need to go outside, we have a perfect view of the feeders through the center’s large observation windows. Our staff and volunteers will assist you with bird identification and the counting process. Bring your favorite binoculars and bird identification book or use our supplies.

Project FeederWatch studies the distribution and populations of winter bird species throughout the country. Our bird count data will be reported to Project FeederWatch and contributes to scientific studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

All skill levels are welcome for this free program.

Animal Story Time

Bird Feeding 101

Learn to recognize the hungry diners at your feeder, what foods they like best, where to place your bird feeders, and how often to clean your feeders. Make your own special bird food mix for your backyard feathered friends.  Discover how you can participate in citizen science by watching the birds at your feeder. 

We’ll share information about the Great Backyard Bird Count, February 16- 19, 2018, and Project FeederWatch. 

For adults and families with children. Suitable for children age 6 and up.  Children must be accompanied by an actively participating adult.

Take a Hike Tuesday

Get outside without going outside! Come to the Coastal Center and participate in the citizen science program Project FeederWatch. Learn about birds as we identify, count, and record the birds at our feeders.  
No need to go outside, we have a perfect view of the feeders through the center’s large observation windows. Our staff and volunteers will assist you with bird identification and the counting process. Bring your favorite binoculars and bird identification book or use our supplies.

Project FeederWatch studies the distribution and populations of winter bird species throughout the country. Our bird count data will be reported to Project FeederWatch and contributes to scientific studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

All skill levels are welcome for this free program.

Thursdays, Jan 18 & 25, Feb 1, 8, 15 & 22 from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Do your kids need to blow off steam after school? Send them to the Center. After a quick snack, we will head out on the trails to explore and search for animal tracks and sign.  The afternoons will be filled with fresh air, exercise and fun. Wildlife lessons will be quietly inserted along the way.  We will go outside, so warm winter clothing and boots are a must. Fee: $60 for the 6-day session.

Winter Walk in the Woods

Join Karen Cowperthwaite, licensed landscape architect and Michelle MacKinnon, advanced master gardener at Deer Pond Farm for a guided walk along trails during National Invasive Species Awareness Week to learn about the non-native plant species that have been introduced in Connecticut. We will examine why certain plants are labeled invasive, the impact they have on our native plant species and the harm that is caused to our bird and other wildlife habitats. Information regarding managing and controlling invasive plants will also be presented.
