Vernal Pool Training

April 6, 2024 9:00 am - 12:30 pm The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
Old Lyme, CT 06371

Vernal pools are an important wetland habitat found throughout Connecticut. Often overlooked and undervalued, they provide essential breeding habitat for numerous amphibian and invertebrate species. This workshop will introduce vernal pools, what they are, how they function, and what species are dependent upon them for survival. With over 60 years of combined experience with local land use commissions, Denise Savageau and Michael Aurelia will review the role Conservation and Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commissions play in protecting this special resource.

Beaver Walk

April 6, 2024 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
Old Lyme, CT 06371

No animal does more to change the landscape than beavers, and they are extremely important in habitat succession. Beaver ponds provide critical habitat for fish and amphibians, and as they drain, they turn into meadows and early successional forests for birds and mammals. We’ll search for evidence of beavers and how they change their surroundings, as well as the birds that rely on beaver modified habitats in the Ames Open Space property in Old Lyme.

Become a Backyard Naturalist

He also will cover The Pollinator Pathway Initiative, No-Mow May, lawns to meadows, and water features. Steve “walks the walk” — his own yard is a model for enhancing the backyard experience. Yours can be too! No registration required. Free -- in lieu of fee, promise to plant a new native species in your yard!

Spring Bird Walk at the Arboretum

The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
Old Lyme, CT 06371

Birds in Connecticut eagerly await the coming of spring, as we put away our winter gear and welcome back the birds we haven’t seen since the fall. Trees and bushes are full of songbirds in the morning, many of which have just traveled hundreds or thousands of miles to get back to their breeding grounds. We’ll look for warblers, thrushes, flycatchers, and more in the forests and wetlands of the Connecticut College Arboretum, an important stopover site for a diversity of bird species.

CT River Lecture Series - Rex Brasher

April 18, 2024 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
Old Lyme, CT 06371

Artists and naturalists have been painting birds for centuries. We know John James Audubon, Fuertes, Peterson and, of course of our current time, Sibley. But who knows Rex Brasher?

Brasher resided in Kent, Connecticut and, unlike Audubon, painted birds from life and was greatly influenced by his friend and mentor, Louis Agassiz Fuertes. His work, created in the period largely between Fuertes and Peterson, was purchased by UCONN decades ago and lacks a proper gallery or access to the collection.

Birds of Pratt Cove

Old Lyme, CT 06371

Historically, Ospreys return to Pratt and Post Coves in late March and typically one or more pairs build nests at locations that allow excellent viewing from the Deep River Land Trust’s Evelyn Hawthorne and Smyth Sanctuaries. The natural history and unique adaptations of these unique “fish hawks” will be the focus of our walk, but as we walk the mostly level ¼ mile trail, we will also scan the marsh for waders, waterfowl and other raptors. The woodland margins can be excellent for spotting early spring land migrants as well.
