Boston Hollow Bird Watch

We will explore Boston Hollow in Ashford, with its northern forest feel. Expect to see Blackburnian and Canada Warblers, Winter Wrens, and Northern Waterthrush, to name a few. We will stay on the road to bird. Limited to 16 participants. Fee:  $20 CAS members; $30 non-members.

Early Morning Bird Walk

Join Andy on one or more of these early morning walks. He will point out various species of birds to you. There are hundreds of acres of protected land to visit. Wear drab colored clothing. Then we’ll head out for a walk through the pollinator garden to learn how diverse seasonal plantings can support birds and pollinators year-round!

Odonata Centrail Training

Odonata Central is a national program designed to expand the understanding of the distribution, biogeography, biodiversity, and identification of Odonata—dragonflies and damselflies—in the Western Hemisphere. Participants will first attend a training session at the center to discuss the biology of odonates and how to collect requested data. With monitoring supplies from RTPEC, volunteers will choose a location to monitor, photographing and identifying dragonflies and damselflies that they encounter.

Bats: Winged Wonders

Join Maureen Heidtmann, one of only three licensed wildlife rehabilitators in Connecticut specializing in caring for bats. Maureen will begin with an overview of bats of the world, with an emphasis on our local species. She will cover myths and misconceptions about them, the many roles they play in ensuring a healthy planet, the perils they face as they struggle to survive, and their amazing resilience. Maureen has a permit from the USDA to keep non-releasable bats for educational purposes. She will bring an “ambassador” bat with her. No registration required. Fee:  $5 CAS members; $10 non-members.

Project Limulus

Project Limulus is a regional program that is organized by Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. The objective of this program is to better understand the distribution, movement, longevity, and mortality of horseshoe crabs in Long Island Sound. Horseshoe crabs are a near threatened species and overharvesting has led to a dramatic decline in Long Island Sound. Participants will attend a training session held at the center to discuss the biology of horseshoe crabs, as well as the protocol for counting and tagging at the beach. A separate day will be dedicated to the beach event, participants meet at Rocky Neck State Park to take part in tagging and monitoring horseshoe crabs.

June is a great time to see warm-weather avian residents!

Boston Hollow Bird Walk

Nature Sketchbook Journaling
