Things That Go Bump in the Night

It’s the time of the year we celebrate Halloween and things that go bump in the night. Through games and hands-on activities discover how nocturnal animals use their senses of smell and hearing to navigate through the night. Create your own special creature of the night. Appropriate families with children age 5 and up.

Saw-whet Owl Banding

This exciting program should be a memorable experience.  Bring your camera.  Last year was a great year with many owls caught and banded. We hope for similar success this year. Become a night watcher with our naturalists and explore the Sanctuary looking for the animals who prefer the cover of darkness. Cider and a visit with a live bird of prey complete the evening. Organic Herb Wreath-Making

Organic Herb Wreath-Making Workshop  With Sal Gilbertie

Herb wreaths wrap up the scents and symbols of the holiday season. For those who would like to fashion their own fresh and dried herb wreath, this is the perfect workshop to attend!

Sal Gilbertie, renowned as one of the country’s leading experts in herbs, will lead this class  creating a wreath out of organic fresh and dried herbs harvested from Gilbertie’s Herb Farm.

Participants will learn how to create a beautiful herbal design using color, texture and balance. This 15” diameter fragrant wreath will contain a variety of organic herbs including: fresh bay, rosemary, thyme, sage and lavender.

Dried wreaths will last for several years if kept away from direct, bright light and out of the weather. They can be misted occasionally with lukewarm water to freshen and bring out their scents. Your holiday wreath will undoubtedly be full of herbal cheer! $45 for members and $50 for non-members.

Turkey Talk on the Trail

Lets talk Turkey in time for Thanksgiving! Join us for a family friendly walk and talk and learn about wild turkeys. We’ll get to handle some artifacts such as a turkey egg, feathers and more along the trails.  Turkeys have distinctive calls that we’ll replicate in the woods in hopes of seeing and hearing some Tom’s and hens.

Recommended for ages 5 and up with actively participating adult.

Trees on the Trail

Please join us with local arborist Robert Judd for a fun Tree ID at Deer Pond Farm. After many of the leaves have fallen from the trees, you’ll get a whole new perspective of nature to enjoy. Seeing the forest through the trees is all about the big picture and connections in nature.  We’ll learn about how important trees are throughout the year to the birds, lots of wildlife and to us.

Introductory Tracking Hike

You may have seen the tracks of a red fox or a fisher in mud or snow. Maybe, you’re lucky and caught a glimpse of a coyote. Connecticut’s forests provide excellent habitat for local wildlife.  Our experienced Citizen Science Volunteers monitor sites in Woodstock, Willington, and Canterbury seasonally, always on the lookout for track and sign of fisher, river otter, mink, moose, black bear, and bobcat. You are welcome to begin or continue training to become a Citizen Science wildlife monitor by attending training hikes that suit your schedule throughout the year.
