Winter in CT may not seem like a great time to go birding, but there is still a lot of bird activity in the state. Many duck species make their way south to winter along the coast and escape freezing waterways further north. Winter is also one of the best times of year to see Bald Eagles in the state. One of the best spots in southeastern CT to see all of these birds is Mamacoke Island on the Thames River, where Bald Eagles roost in the trees and ducks congregate in the open waters of the river. Even when the temperature drops and ice and snow blanket Connecticut’s landscape, birds are still active in winter. Many species can be found exclusively in winter in Connecticut, as our coastal habitat provides relatively more temperate conditions than those further north.
