Grand Grounds Opening Preview for Sherman Residents

Sherman residents, join us for this special opening in recognition of your support and welcome to the Sherman community.

The grounds and trails will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for you to enjoy on your own.

A bird walk led by Cathy Hagadorn, director, and Jim Arrigoni, conservation biologist, will begin at 10 a.m.

We look forward to welcoming our neighbors and thank you for being part of the legacy of the gift from the late Walter and Kathy Wriston.

Free for Sherman residents.

Dress for walks that cover approximately 1.5 miles along moderately hilly terrain and the weather. Inclement weather cancels. Bring binoculars, camera, bug spray, sunscreen and a sense of adventure.

The birds are much quieter in mid-summer when they focus on raising their young, but there is still plenty to see and hear in July.  Join us after the heat of the day has passed for a cool evening walk among the diverse field, forest and wetland habitats.  Bullfrogs, crickets and katydids will serenade us while we enjoy the fireworks show put on by lightening bugs.  Please bring a flashlight or headlamp.

Advanced Volunteer Training: Monitoring & Data Collection

Current volunteers may join, Jim Arrigoni, conservation biologist to learn about citizen science projects dedicated to monitoring trends in bird populations. Topics covered will include the rationale for monitoring and the nitty-gritty aspects of data collection. A variety of established projects will be addressed, including the Connecticut Bird Atlas, which we are currently collecting data. A short walk outside is included to put into practice protocols.

Join Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation for The Connecticut Audubon Society for early morning bird walks at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, CT.  All levels of birders are welcome on these relaxing excursions along the trails on our way to the birding hot spot.  We will look, listen and learn for our resident and summer birds as we collect data for the Connecticut Bird Atlas Survey.  Birds we may encounter include: Scarlet Tanager, Indigo Bunting, Blue-winged Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, American Redstart and more!
Dress for walks that cover approximately 1.5 miles along moderately hilly terrain and the weather. Inclement weather cancels. Bring binoculars, camera, bug spray, sunscreen and a sense of adventure.

Spaces are still available for the Connecticut Audubon Society’s summer camp in Fairfield, which offers full and half-day sessions in a unique learning environment. Campers ages 4 through 14 attend week-long, science and nature-themed programs that use the varied habitats of the Larsen Wildlife Sanctuary and the Center’s interactive classroom facilities to inspire and build a life-long connection to, and appreciation for, the natural world.

The staff is led by teacher-naturalists, with education/science experience, and is trained in first aid, CPR and Epi-Pen. High staff-to-camper ratio ensures a safe camp experience. Options for before and after care, and “lunch bunch” are available for half-day sessions.

Wildflower Identification
