Local wildlife are busily preparing for the colder months by taking advantage of what is left of the harvest season. Many mammals are fattening up to survive the winter, while others - like migratory birds - are fueling up as much as possible to power their lengthy flights to warmer locations. Join Conservation Biologist Jim Arrigoni for this casual 1.5-mile walk to explore what critters are up to in the diverse forest, meadow, and wetland habitats of Deer Pond Farm.

Plastic Pollution in Our Oceans: Migrating Through the Food Chain?

October 27, 2022 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
Old Lyme, CT 06371

In his presentation, Dr. Ward will discuss the current understanding of plastic pollution in the ocean and its interactions with marine animals. He will present his research into the capture, ingestion, rejection and elimination of microplastics by commercially important bivalves. The goal of this work is to understand uptake of microplastics by marine animals, identify a robust bioindicator for plastic particles in the ocean, and examine the potential for transfer of microplastics through the food chain.

Hawk Walk

November 5, 2022 10:00 am - 12:00 pm The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
The Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center
Old Lyme, CT 06371

Fall in Connecticut means migration. In late morning and early afternoon, as many songbirds settle down from their night flights, our birds of prey are making use of warming temperatures and rising thermals to mirgate. Many species make their way through and out of Connecticut, and the open grasslands and forests of Avery Farm Preserve are great spots to search for these majestic flyers.
