CT River Lecture Series - Quetzals: The Icons of the Cloud Forest

    November 2, 2023

Our final lecture of the season takes us into the splendid highland cloud forests of Central America to learn about one of the legendary birds of those habitats: the dazzling Resplendent Quetzal. Alan Poole, known to many of us locally for his research and writing on Ospreys, has spent portions of the past decade in Costa Rica, where quetzals reign supreme.

  • Woodpeckers Walk at Conn College Arbo

Woodpeckers Walk at Conn College Arbo

    November 11, 2023

When you think of the soundscape for a forest, chances are one of the sounds you think of is the drumming of a woodpecker. Woodpeckers are among the most unusual groups of birds, with numerous adaptations for their lifestyle. All of the regularly occurring species of woodpecker can be found in the forests of the Connecticut College Arboretum, and with fewer leaves on the trees, late fall is one of the best times to search for them.

    Hawk Watch at the RTPEC

    November 18, 2023

Late fall is a great time in CT to watch for migrating raptors, as many birds make their way back into the state from further north, or pass through on their way further south. We'll watch for Eagles, Hawks, and Falcons at the RTP Estuary Center in Old Lyme. Located on 5 acres on the Lieutenant River, the mix of open habitat, wetlands, and scrubby forests at the center attracts a diverse array of species. Drop in any time between 10 am and 1 pm! Participation is free though donations are welcome!

    Fall Bird Walk at Hammonasset

    November 29, 2023

Walking the Cedar Island and Meg’s Point trails we will search for both land and water birds in a variety of habitats including sandy beach, rocky shore, salt marsh and woods. With fall migration still underway we are likely to record an excellent species list and are likely to encounter a few that are uncommon or rare in Connecticut.
