May Wildflower Hike

Spring is busting out all over on Deer Pond Farm trails! Join Karen Cowperthwaite, landscape architect, to explore the woodland and wetland trails of Deer Pond Farm in Sherman.  We’ll marvel at jack-in-the-pulpit and be charmed by delicate wild geranium and violets.  We’ll look for bloodroot and baneberry, columbine and mayflowers, trillium and blue cohosh as well as those wetland beauties false hellebore, may apple, and golden alexanders.  Enjoy these spring bloomers in their natural habitats and learn about their benefits for pollinators and birds.

BIRD WATCH FOR FOLKS WITH LIMITED MOBILITY

Thursday Morning Bird Walks With Milan Bull

AFTER SCHOOL NATURE CLUB

Do your kids need to blow off steam after school? Send them to the Center. After a quick snack, we will head out on the trails to explore and search for animal tracks and sign.  The afternoons will be filled with fresh air, exercise and fun. Wildlife lessons will be quietly inserted along the way.  We will go outside, so warm winter clothing and boots are a must. Fee: $60 for the 6-day session.

Join us for a special members-only event at our newest sanctuary: Deer Pond Farm!

With over 800 acres, Deer Pond Farm is  by far our largest sanctuary and encompasses land in both Connecticut and New York.

Come explore the grounds after hours. Take a leisurely stroll around the pond and listen to the spring peepers, or keep your eyes to the sky for warblers and other birds springing back in Connecticut.

We will have refreshments and musical entertainment.

This event is to thank you, our members, for being so supportive of our work protecting Connecticut’s environment. It’s free to attend however registration is required.We can’t wait to see you there!

Family Friendly Walk & Talk: "Baby Birds & More"

Why do birds sing? How and where do they raise babies? How can we use the signs around us to know if birds are breeding? Join Dr. Allyson Jackson, assistant professor of environmental studies at Purchase College SUNY, for a nature walk through Deer Pond Farm to better understand the birds that breed in our region. For those interested in the Connecticut Bird Atlas, we will talk about how to identify and rank signs of breeding, which is important for your atlas counts.

Navigation Class

Inside we’ll learn how to use a compass and then head out into the sanctuary to put our new skills to work. You’ll be challenged to set a course and, using       coordinates, navigate your way through the Larsen Sanctuary. For ages 8 and up. $5/person. Pre-registration is required.
