Bird Feeding 101

February 11, 2018 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Learn to recognize the hungry diners at your feeder, what foods they like best, where to place your bird feeders, and how often to clean your feeders. Make your own special bird food mix for your backyard feathered friends.  Discover how you can participate in citizen science by watching the birds at your feeder. 

We’ll share information about the Great Backyard Bird Count, February 16- 19, 2018, and Project FeederWatch. 

For adults and families with children. Suitable for children age 6 and up.  Children must be accompanied by an actively participating adult.

Connecticut Audubon members $5, family max $18; non-members $10, family max. $35.

Winter Nature Writing Workshop

Learn about the Teale’s, their love of nature and Edwin’s extraordinary writing career, while working on your own verse. All levels of experience welcome. Fee: $10 CAS members; $20 non-members.

Take a Hike Tuesday

Tuesday, February 13 10 a.m. (2-2.5 hours) 2.5-3.5 mile loop moderate hilly

Join Karen Cowperthwaite, landscape architect to explore some different trails at Deer Pond Farm while learning about identifying our trees during the winter! While we will not be flying, we will be keeping a consistent pace. Please bring water and hiking pole if you have one.

Junior Animal Care Keepers

Help care for the Center’s animals. From gross to glamorous, learn about animal husbandry care, preparing and offering food and ensuring they have a healthy setting. Six-week series: members $60/child: non-members $80/child.  Pre-registration required.

Project FeederWatch

Get outside without going outside! Come to the Coastal Center and participate in the citizen science program Project FeederWatch. Learn about birds as we identify, count, and record the birds at our feeders.  
No need to go outside, we have a perfect view of the feeders through the center’s large observation windows. Our staff and volunteers will assist you with bird identification and the counting process. Bring your favorite binoculars and bird identification book or use our supplies.

Project FeederWatch studies the distribution and populations of winter bird species throughout the country. Our bird count data will be reported to Project FeederWatch and contributes to scientific studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

All skill levels are welcome for this free program.

Mammal Wildlife Tracking Hikes

Owl Walks

Join Andy Rzeznikiewicz in search of wintering owls. We will attempt to find screech, barred, and great-horned owls. In some years saw-whet and long-eared owls are possible to find. Most of the calling is done from the road. Program is cancelled if bad weather (rain, snow, high winds). Fee: $5 CAS members; $10 non-members.
