Join Maureen Heidtmann, one of only three licensed wildlife rehabilitators in Connecticut specializing in caring for bats. Maureen will begin with an overview of bats of the world, with an emphasis on our local species. She will cover myths and misconceptions about them, the many roles they play in ensuring a healthy planet, the perils they face as they struggle to survive, and their amazing resilience. Maureen has a permit from the USDA to keep non-releasable bats for educational purposes. She will bring an “ambassador” bat with her. No registration required. Fee: $5 CAS members; $10 non-members.

Project Limulus is a regional program that is organized by Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. The objective of this program is to better understand the distribution, movement, longevity, and mortality of horseshoe crabs in Long Island Sound. Horseshoe crabs are a near threatened species and overharvesting has led to a dramatic decline in Long Island Sound. Participants will attend a training session held at the center to discuss the biology of horseshoe crabs, as well as the protocol for counting and tagging at the beach. A separate day will be dedicated to the beach event, participants meet at Rocky Neck State Park to take part in tagging and monitoring horseshoe crabs.
