As dusk rolls in we’ll be heading out to the H. Smith Richardson Wildlife Preserve & Christmas Tree Farm in Westport to see the unique mating call of the American Woodcock (also known as Timber doodles). Join us to view this spectacular display as the males fly upwards in spirals, twittering his “peent” calls, and then zig zags back down to the ground.

Ruffed Grouse Drumming Survey

We’re starting bright and early and heading up to Aton Forest in Norfolk, CT. For early birders, this is a great opportunity to see the Ruffed Grouse. While normally hard to spot, the males are easy to hear in the spring as they “drum” by beating their wings while on a log to attract a mate.

You’ll walk a two kilometer trail and roadway listening for Ruffed Grouse with Mike Aurelia, experienced birder and Connecticut Audubon board member.

Saturday, April 14, 2017, at 5 a.m.

Park in the Aton Forest Headquarters driveway at 270 N Colebrook Rd. Be prepared for cold and uneven terrain.

In the event of rain or high wind the survey will be rescheduled for April 16, weather permitting.

Because of the early starting time be sure to be sure to RSVP ahead of time to or 203-259-0416 x106.

There is limited space available. Members only, free admission.

Additional details will be emailed to registrants.
