Important Coastal Center law enacted in Hartford

Wildlife observation draws thousands of visitors to the Coastal Center each year.

In the Sanctuaries…

August 2, 2021 — We are happy to be able to tell you about the success of a bill in Hartford that allows Connecticut Audubon to sign a new lease for the Milford Point Coastal Center and to continue operating that great nature sanctuary.

As you may remember, the Coastal Center operates on state land. The old lease expired and a new one required a new state law authorizing it.

Almost 900 Connecticut Audubon supporters emailed the General Assembly about the issue.

Representative Frank Smith of Milford, a strong supporter of the Coastal Center. made passage of the bill a priority.

He followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, Representative Kim Rose, another strong supporter.

Many others, including members of the Coastal Center regional board, submitted testimony.

The effort was essential in persuading the General Assembly and the Governor to enact the law.

They all have our deep appreciation.

We can now start negotiating a new lease with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which has been a great partner for years.

And if you haven’t been to the Coastal Center in a while, please visit.

Shorebird migration is just getting underway and the sanctuary is alive with birds and other wildlife.
