Teacher-Naturalist – part-time
Summary
The Connecticut Audubon Society’s RTP Estuary Center in Old Lyme is looking for a part-time Teacher-Naturalist!
The principal role of this position is to teach CAS education programs, working closely with team members (volunteers, graduate/undergraduate students, and other staff), to a variety of audiences from early learners to adults. This is a great opportunity for those who love working with children, have a passion for nature, and are seeking more experience in environmental education. Additionally, this position will require some educational administrative work when not teaching. Availability on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, as well as some Saturdays, is required.
Primary Responsibilities
- Implement Connecticut Audubon Society’s programs, including their K-12 education program, Science in Nature, as well as adult, family, youth, and summer camp programs
- Plan and implement creative, hands-on, and engaging programs for diverse age groups
- Support program logistics, including setup/cleanup and materials preparation
- Assist with education administrative duties
- Ensure all programs are conducted according to CAS guidelines
- Participate in education-related trainings and attend statewide education meetings
- Represent Connecticut Audubon Society in a positive and professional manner
- Other duties as assigned
- Some local travel may be required
Desired Requirements
- Experience in education, environmental science, wildlife biology or related field
- Prior outdoor science education experience working with children
- Comfort teaching through virtual platforms including Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meets.
- Physical capability to accomplish the responsibilities of the position
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends as needed
This position provides the opportunity to:
- Teach natural science programs to Pre K-Grade 12, families, adults, and community groups.
- Build on skills in environmental education techniques, integrating school science curriculum into
informal settings. - Expand knowledge of local natural history
- Improve ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences
Salary
Hourly rate based on experience (range $17-$20)
