September Bird Walks at the Coastal Center
Coastal Center at Milford Point
1 Milford Point Road
Milford CT 06460

This American Oystercatcher, with the leg band 5T, has been observed at Milford Point for eight years. We will be looking for birds like her, and more, during these bird walks!
Enjoy the great outdoors with us for some bird walks this September! Join Coastal Rangers Matt Joyce and Johann Heupel as they look for all types of early migrants, from warblers to sandpipers. These walks are timed for low tides, to leave plenty of room for participants to view shorebirds with minimal disturbance to them. You’ll get to explore Milford Point and look for hundreds if not thousands of shorebirds, such as Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Black-bellied Plover, and Semipalmated Plover. We’ll also see protected species like Piping Plovers and American Oystercatchers. Be sure to bring good walking shoes and binoculars; walk leaders will make sure you see plenty of birds! Beginner birders are welcome. The Coastal Center has a limited supply of binoculars to loan out if needed.
The Milford Point sandbar is just what it sounds like—a wide spit of sand, shadeless and fully exposed to Long Island Sound and the elements—so check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. We recommend bringing an extra layer, it tends to get windy at the coast.
