Fall migration is here. We want to make it more fun for you, and better for birds.

September 2, 2025 — People who love birds can’t wait for spring migration, and for good reason — after a long winter, the arrival of 3.7 billion birds from south of the border seems like a deluge of song and color.

And yet for sheer numbers, fall migration is far bigger than spring.

One billion birds bigger.

We see it here in Connecticut. On four separate nights last October, for example, more than 6.5 million birds migrated south through Connecticut.

It’s a reminder that fall is a great time to celebrate and enjoy birds by going birding. And it’s a great time to do a few simple things to help birds make their journeys safely without, for example, smashing into windows or stopping to refuel in places with no food or cover.

We’re calling this the Bird-Friendly Fall.

Are you interested in witnessing the fall migration? We have 30-plus programs scheduled throughout Connecticut. Like Connecticut Audubon’s Migration Magic in May, there is something for all levels of skill and enthusiasm, and all ages.

You can find the list of Bird-Friendly Fall programs HERE.

Are you interested in knowing what you can do to help migratory birds? We’ll show you how to make your houses and offices—and their windows—safer. Well over a billion birds die in North America each year when they crash into windows and buildings, so it’s not a trivial problem.

Reducing the number of those deaths throughout the country will help reverse the long-term population decline that has seen the number of birds in North America fall by 30 percent over the past five decades.

We also have plenty of information about how to maintain and improve your own property to benefit birds.

Look for all this and more in future emails, on our website, and on social media. We’re confident that we’ll have something that catches your interest. Thanks!
