Video: Experts discuss “Dying Birds: What we know and what we don’t know”

August 14, 2021 — Watch the video of our Zoom discussion, “Dying Birds: What we know and what we don’t know,” recorded August 11, 2021.

The discussion was designed to give you the latest information on the unidentified condition that has been killing birds in Connecticut and in many states to the south and west.

It features four experts from the state of Connecticut, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, the University of Connecticut, and the Connecticut Audubon Society.

  • Jenny Dickson, Director of he Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Wildlife Division
  • Brian Evans, PhD, Migratory Bird Ecologist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center
  • Salvatore Frasca, DVM, Director of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Connecticut
  • Patrick Comins, Executive Director of the Connecticut Audubon Society.

Topics include:

  • the extent and size of the problem in Connecticut and other states;
  • what the tests on dead birds have shown;
  • why it’s a good idea to take bird feeders down;
  • what they will be looking for in order to recommend that bird feeders can go back up;
  • whether testing will continue;
  • why it’s been difficult to identify the condition;
