Blessed with an incredible diversity of birds, environments, and cultures, India offers an intense spectrum of avian riches. With more than 1,300 species recorded in India and representing 12,5 percent of the world's birds, 42 are endemic. While outdoors, a serious birder will not have a moment to relax, and the variety can be spoiling. From the Himalayan region, to desert, to marshes, to swamps, riverine, and woodlands birds, the list is endless. The Bhutan extension features a country covering an area roughly the size of Switzerland, offering opportunities for peace and solitude in a striking mountain setting. Lying in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is almost completely mountainous, with altitudes varying from 492 feet to 24,600 feet within a distance of less than 62 miles. Its northern border lies in the main Himalayan chain on the southern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Leader: Rob Taylor

Expect sea ducks, rare gulls, and spectacular Snowy Owls as we search the desolate beaches by four-wheel-drive vehilce. There is always some aspect of nature taking center stage depending on the time of year. In April, vernal pools steal the show. On the first warm, rainy nights of spring, otherwise secretive amphibians fall over themselves to be the first to lay their eggs in these temporary wetlands that will disappear by late summer. With conservation biologist Jim Arrigoni, we’ll explore around the edges of the vernal pools and other wetlands at Deer Pond Farm, looking for eggs of Wood Frogs and Spotted Salamanders as well as the diverse and abundant invertebrate life. If you have them, bring polarized sunglasses for better viewing into the water.
Allow for an average of two hours and 1.5 – 2 miles. Dress for the weather. Inclement weather cancels. Bring binoculars, camera, water, walking stick and a sense of adventure. Binoculars are available to borrow.

If this year is typical, the new lime green-colored leaves will be breaking their buds at this time, signaling the transition from when birding can be done more effectively by eye than ear. With conservation biologist Jim Arrigoni, we’ll also look for spring ephemeral wildflowers on the forest floor, soaking up the last rays of sun before fresh foliage casts its shadow. If we’re lucky, we’ll also enjoy the sound of toads trilling in the ponds and wetlands at Deer Pond Farm.
Allow for an average of two hours and 1.5 -2 miles. Dress for the weather. Inclement weather cancels. Bring binoculars, camera, water bottle, walking stick and a sense of adventure. Binoculars are available to borrow.
