Even without leaves, trees offer many clues about their identity: bark color and texture, overall form, habitat, and twig characteristics. Join Connecticut Audubon Society Master Naturalists John Ehrenreich, author of Native Trees of Connecticut, and Diane Nizlek for the winter edition of Deer Pond Farm’s seasonal Tree ID Program. This program will begin indoors, where identification basics will be reviewed before hitting the trails for a walk to put our new ID skills to work. Do the parks and overgrown lots in Connecticut's poorer urban neighborhoods have fewer birds or does it just seem that way because fewer birders visit those places? The question has important implications not just for birds but for neighborhood residents as well.
Join us via Zoom on Thursday, February 15, 2024, 7-8 p.m. for a presentation on the topic by Diego Ellis Soto, a Ph.D. candidate in ecology and evolutionary biology at Yale.
Diego calls his presentation: "Biodiversity data is shaped by socioeconomics in the Age of Digital Information: Are there less birds or is there less bird data?"

When it’s cold and snowing outside it can seem as if nature is standing still, waiting for warmer weather. But take a walk outside and you’ll see that life abounds and that plants and animals have amazing adaptations to surviving winter here in Connecticut. We’ll search for the state’s winter inhabitants and learn about what plants and animals do when the temperature drops, and the ground is covered in snow.

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with Jack Swatt, president of the Connecticut chapter of TACF, and Ginny Patsun, manager of the TACF seed orchard in Stafford. The phrase “clear day thunder” has a sad derivation. It is a description of the sound of gigantic, dead chestnut trees crashing to the forest floor.
