Colorado's Grouse and Prairie Chickens

April 13, 2019 Apr 13th - 23rd -

Our tour is designed to allow time for birding the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the Colorado Plateau, and the marvelous leks of Colorado's grasslands, emphasizing the western birds you seldom or never see on the east coast. The tour provides the best opportunity to find each of the many target bird species, including Greater Sage-Grouse, Gunnison Sage-Grouse, Lesser Prairie-Chicken, Greater Prairie-Chicken, Dusky Grouse, White-tailed Ptarmigan, Three-toed Woodpecker, rosy-finches, and more. Each day is a total natural history experience! Leader: Phil Rusch and second driver TBD.

Follow in the footsteps of the Incas and explorer Hiram Bingham! Leader is Lucretia Bingham, a Connecticut native, outstanding travel writer, and granddaughter of Hiram. Visit one of the world's deepest canyons and search for Andean Condor. Hike to ruins and relax in some of the finest hot springs imaginable. Visit Lake Titicaca for a boat trip. Take a classic railway journey across the high plains to explore Cusco, the former Inca capital, full of culture and history. Travel through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to explore the awe-inspiring lost city of Machu Picchu. Optional post-tour trekking on the Inca Trail.

Early Migration Bird Walk with Miley Bull

Spring is prime time bird watching for the experienced, beginners and all levels in between! Join Miley Bull, senior director of science and conservation, on these guided walks through the diverse habitats of Deer Pond Farm to look, listen and learn about our   warmer weather visiting birds. He’ll explain migration basics, including the how and why tanagers, warblers, orioles, flycatchers, vireos and other birds pass through our area or stay awhile to nest as they head north along the Atlantic Flyway.Allow for an average of two hours and 1.5 -2 miles. Dress for the weather. Think head, hands and feet!  Wool hats, gloves and socks are really good choices. Bring water bottle, walking stick, binoculars, camera and a sense of adventure.  Inclement weather cancels.

The Coastal Center offers a front row seat to the changes of the season through stories, hands-on activities, crafts for child and their adult and, weather permitting, outdoor exploration. Welcome the season with your curious little naturalist at Milford Point!

For children age 2-4 years accompanied by an actively participating adult. Class fee includes one child and one adult. Members $8/class; Non-members $13/class. Pre-registration required.

Eagle and Osprey Cruise

Connecticut Audubon Society EcoTravel will again offer a number of boat cruises to search for Bald Eagle, Osprey, and other bird species migrating and nesting along the Connecticut River. Bald Eagles can be found along the lower river, a habitat that hosts a transient winter population as well as nesting residents. Naturalists are on board the vessel to  share information about the Connecticut River, the birdlife, and natural history. The vessel has a heated cabin, restrooms, and three decks for optimal viewing. Tours are approximately three hours in length and depart at 10am and 2pm. Cruises depart from Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam. Appropriate for children eight and over. Food and drink are available on board. Enjoy the beauty of the Connecticut River in spring!
