June 3 is National Trails Day and the RTPEC is celebrating with Birding Basics at Hammonasset. Join us for an hour focused on appreciating the birds of the estuary.
Bugs and birds need your help! Come to The Connecticut Audubon Society’s 2nd Annual Pollinator Palooza and to learn about the decline of pollinators, why their health is critical to our food and ecosystems, and what you can do to make a difference.
We may not always notice the hummingbirds, bats, bees, beetles and butterflies that carry pollen from one plant to another while collecting nectar. These hard-working animals help pollinate over 75% of our flowering plants, and nearly 75% of our crops.
Without pollinators, wildlife would have fewer nutritious berries and seeds, and we would miss many fruits, vegetables and nuts like blueberries, squash and almonds… not to mention chocolate and coffee!
At this free, family-friendly event, learn how your own yard can be improved for birds, pollinators and other wildlife. Hear animal and plant experts talk about the biology and habitat needs of pollinators. Visit with local gardening and environmental experts supporting this event including: Beardsley Zoo, the Milford Garden Club, Milford Environmental Protection Initiative, CT Sea Grant, CAES, USDA and local beekeeper Ralph Harrison and UCONN Master Composters. There is something for everyone including live displays, kid crafts, and free pollinator seed packets, handouts, posters and more.
On our Sanctuary walk we’ll discover ponds, a garden marsh, temperate deciduous forest, meadow, and swamp, while observing bird habitats. We’ll see ecological points of interest and discuss efforts to protect them. Terrain is easy to moderate. 20% off field guides and walking sticks in the Nature Store! Preregistration required. Please call 203-259-6305.
