Nachaug State Forest Bird Walk

Bird Watching by Kayak on the CT River

Join us as we partner with L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Programs for this unique birding experience. Beginning and ending at the Glastonbury Boat Launch, Connecticut Audubon staff will lead you in looking and listening for the birds that inhabit the CT River banks and coves while L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery staff provides kayaking instruction and guidance. All kayaks, paddles, PFD’s and binoculars will be provided!

Songbirds are switching from singing to defending territory and attracting mates to caring for their young. Join Sanctuary Manager/Naturalist Lori Lichtenauer for a casual-paced walk at Deer Pond Farm. Lori will share how to identify fledglings via their plumage and calls, and the behaviors of parent birds. Learn how and when to help baby birds and other wildlife, especially during the summer.

Forests are dynamic ecosystems that are constantly undergoing change. Forestry management goals are to increase native tree species, tree age classes, and support habitat for diverse birds and wildlife. Join Deer Pond Farm’s Sanctuary Manager/Naturalist and certified forester Lori Lichtenauer on a hike to discuss the previous and ongoing forest management projects here. Along the hike, we will discuss the similarities and differences between traditional forestry and silviculture, including forestry management challenges with climate change.
