Amphibians Three Part Web Series

This unique course sheds light on some of our most mysterious, secretive and fascinating wildlife – the amphibians! After learning about the characteristics and habitats of Connecticut’s 23 species of salamanders, newts, frogs and toads, conservation biologist Jim Arrigoni will highlight interesting and unusual aspects of their ecology and how this information can be put to good use!

March 29 -Week 2 will cover the 11 species of frogs and toads found in Connecticut. Jim will discuss identification characteristics, including vocalizations, and habitats as well as unique behaviors.

Vernal pools are unique and seasonal wetland habitats which support a diverse set of plants and animals. From breeding frogs and salamanders to water beetles and dragonfly larvae, these  ecosystems enhance forest food webs and provide critical habitat for many species.  In this hybrid webinar, join conservation biologist Jim Arrigoni live in the field as he explores a local vernal pool. Conservation and Education Coordinator Joe Attwater will discuss what makes these habitats so important and distinct.

Participants will enjoy a unique opportunity to hear behind the scene stories and ask questions about the creation of this extraordinary documentary, filmed primarily in Old Lyme’s own Great Island Marsh over a period of 7 years. Season of the Osprey has been called “dazzling” and “the best footage of osprey flying, fishing and at the nest that I have ever seen” by Dr. Alan F. Poole of the Cornell Lab or Ornithology.

Join us at 4 pm on April 9th for the walk - and/or come along to enjoy music at Two Roads at 6 pm. $1 per beer purchased will be donated to Connecticut Audubon for shorebird work.

Following our outing at Milford Point, the event moves to Two Roads Brewing Co @ 1700 Stratford Ave, Stratford where the band will commence performing at 6 pm.

The Hector Gannet band cares deeply about wildlife and has a special affinity for the Gannet; it is a threatened species in the UK.

Long before the trees leaf out and the tropical birds arrive, life is already busy beneath the water’s surface of vernal pools. The Preserve’s woodland wetlands are breeding habitat for Spotted Salamanders and Wood Frogs as well as a surprising diversity of invertebrates. With the aid of a net and magnification devices, we’ll get a glimpse of the rich variety of vernal pool life.  Terrain is gentle, but trails are muddy in spots; waterproof footwear is recommended.

Viginia Rail Bird Walk

The goal is to hear and observe Virginia Rail, as well as other speicies of birds such as Common Snipe and Vesper Sparrow.  Fee  $10 members/ $20 non-members.
